Bute House Preparatory School for Girls 7 Plus (7+) Overview
Bute House Preparatory School has a unique non-competitive, inclusive academic ethos, where the school never put students into situations where they may feel diminished by failure. In practice, this means that Bute House Preparatory School does not give marks*, grades, ranking lists, exams, prizes, prefects, or any other forms of public promotion of one student above another. Every child is encouraged to do their best, to set their own targets with the support from their teachers, and to acknowledge and be proud of their own progress, personal strengths and weaknesses, and to never compare themselves with their classmates – every girl runs her own best race.
Every girl is encouraged, and their talents are celebrated, whether these are academic, musical, linguistic, artistic, dramatic, or sporting. Bute House Preparatory School wants every girl to graduate with an always ready to “have a go” attitude, with the ability to stretch their boundaries, and not be afraid of failure.

Registration
The first step in 7+ admission to Bute House Preparatory School is registering the candidate to the Bute House Preparatory School Registrar by sending

- £100 registration fee
- Copy of the candidate’s birth certificate
The deadline for registration is 31st October in the year preceding entry, OR, when candidates confirmed reaches 200.
The second step is to confirm your daughter as a 7+ candidate and to secure a place at the Assessment. Bute House Preparatory School requires:

- £100 examination fee

School Visit
Bute House Preparatory School hold Open Mornings towards the end of Spring Term and early in Summer Term. Open Mornings are for parents of candidates who have registered by completing the Bute House Preparatory School Registration Form. Invitations are sent to parents of all registered candidates by this point.

Timeline
Bute House Preparatory School holds 7+ entrance exams in January of the year in which successful candidates will begin school in September.
Assessments
Bute House Preparatory School states that 7+ candidates will, ‘engage in a series of enjoyable activities which have been carefully planned to assess as many aspects of the candidates as possible.’ These assessed criteria include, reading competence, writing ability, mathematical skills, strategies, reasoning, and problem solving.
Bute House Preparatory School offers no sample assessment papers, but states that as a general guide, Bute House Preparatory School 7+ assessments are designed at a Year 2 level with opportunities to extend and explore each candidate’s potential.
Bute House Preparatory School 7+ candidates are assessed in small groups, which are decided by their months of birth. Each group will spend the morning of the assessment with three or four members of Bute House Preparatory School staff, who will interreact with the candidates with the aim to put them at ease.
Bute House Preparatory School provides opportunities for teaching during the morning to assess each 7+ candidate’s learning behaviour and learning potential. Bute House Preparatory School also provides play and informal conversations to gain a holistic picture of each 7+ candidate’s interests and personal strengths.
Bute House Preparatory School’s assessments lasts over two days to give a chance to every 7+ candidate in the small groups. The activities will be different on each day, however, the assessments and tasks will be of the same standard on both days.
Bute House Preparatory School advises parents to tell their daughters that they are coming to visit a school and will be able to engage in some enjoyable activities there. This is in line with the Bute House Preparatory School non-competitive, inclusive academic ethos. And aimed to avoid giving the children anxiety and to give the candidates the best chance of showing their real abilities and personalities. The 7+ candidates will also be given a snack and a drink during their time at Bute House Preparatory School and will be given a tour around the school so they can learn about the school and staff a little better.
After the entry assessment, if the 7+ candidate is selected to return to Bute House Preparatory School for an interview, you will be notified by letter soon after the assessment.

Interviews also take place during January at Bute House Preparatory School. If your daughter reaches the interview stage, Bute House Preparatory School will require a reference from your daughter’s previous school.
The 7+ interview will always be conducted by Bute House Preparatory School senior staff members in a relaxed setting, which is in line with Bute House Preparatory School’s non-competitive, inclusive academic ethos. The interview serves as an opportunity for the Bute House Preparatory School senior staff to listen to the 7+ candidate’s experiences and views.
The 7+ candidates do not need to bring anything to the interview. This is also an opportunity for parents to meet the Bute House Preparatory School senior staff members and ask any questions.
After the interviews, Bute House Preparatory School will write to you with either an offer of a firm place or a space in their waiting list. The waiting list will depend on whether other candidates take up their firm offers.
Successful 7+ candidates and their parents will be sent invitations to ‘New Girls’ Tea’ and ‘Welcome to Bute’ day. There will also be a parents’ BBQ one evening in July. These events will take place in the summer term before the start of academic term in September. These events aim to help the candidates and parents to adjust to the school in a smooth and easy way.

Bursary Introduction
Bute House Preparatory School offers means-tested bursaries with the value of the bursaries calculated on the financial circumstances of the family. Bute House Preparatory School awards up to six means tested bursaries are awarded to 7+ candidates each year.
Bursaries may be awarded in the form of a discount of up to 100 per cent of Bute House Preparatory School annual tuition fees, a uniform allowance, and support towards the cost of compulsory residential visits.

Relevant Documents
To apply for a bursary, parents will have to submit a completed 7+ registration form (please indicate on the Registration Form that you would like to apply for financial assistance because bursary applicants do not pay the £100 registration fee or the £100 assessment fee) and bursary application form with supporting evidence and a copy of the 7+ candidate’s birth certificate.
Bursary Application Form
Bute House Preparatory School requires financial data of your household for the period ending 31st August of the year before the 7+ candidate’s entry. For example, if your daughter is registered for entry in September 2022, you must include financial data of the period starting from 31st August 2021.
Deadline
The deadline for bursary applications is 31st October of the year preceding entry, OR, when candidates confirmed reaches 200. Bute House Preparatory School advises parents to submit the relevant documents well before 31st October. The bursary application form can be submitted after the registration form as long as it is submitted before the 31st October.
